Things to do in Mayfair London

I was inspired by the piece in this month’s issue of The Concierge Magazine to create my own piece on one of London’s most iconic districts, Mayfair. Mayfair which was once originally called The May Fair is an area in central London, situated in the city of Westminster. It is named after the annual May Fair which used to take place on the site that is Shepherd Market today. Today the district is synonymous with opulence and known for being highly expensive and a firm favourite of the rich and famous. Each year tourists come from all over the world for a taste of the luxury lifestyle in Mayfair.  It is home to some of London’s finest and most expensive luxury hotels, restaurants, shops, private member clubs and houses.

If you’re visiting Mayfair here are 5 things not to miss out on.

Firstly shopping. Shopping in Mayfair is a must. It’s the playground of the wealthy and has shops to match. Whether it’s just window shopping or splurging on an expensive item it is the best destination in London for luxury shopping and goods. There are an abundance of jewellery shops and designer boutiques to choose from that offer bespoke pieces and this seasons must haves straight off the catwalks.

Afternoon Tea. There is no better place in the whole of London to experience a quintessentially British Afternoon Tea than in the exclusive area of Mayfair. Afternoon Tea is an English tradition and something you must try during your stay in England. A place highly recommended for Afternoon Tea is The Dorchester Hotel. Their Afternoon Tea is served five times daily in The Promenade and in The Spatisserie. They have a wide selection of Afternoon Teas to choose from, from a traditional Afternoon Tea to a fun Ice Cream Tea for the warm summer months.

To experience the ultimate in luxury a night in one of the 5 star hotels in Mayfair needs to be experienced to be believed. A stay at the prestigious Brown’s Hotel in the heart of Mayfair is always recommended. The luxury hotel was the first hotel to open in London back in 1837 and since then has opened its doors to many well-known names. The hotel has elegant rooms and suits, all of which are uniquely decorated with antiques and contemporary artwork. Brown’s prides themselves on their outstanding personal service and dedication to guests, where no request is too big. For indulging the spa at Brown’s is available for all the family including children and each treatment can tailored around the guests specific requirements.

Visit the art galleries. Mayfair is full of culture and history so naturally they have extensive range of art dealers and art galleries with exhibitions on display throughout the year.

Fine Dining. Mayfair is home to many fine restaurants. Cuisines from all over the world can be found from French to Russian and British and many more. One restaurant that is well known for exquisite food is Tamarind of Mayfair. Tamarind offers Indian dishes and it was the first Indian restaurant in the UK and Europe to be awarded a Michelin star.
