Royal Holloway, University of London

Egham, Surrey, TW20 0EX

Royal Holloway, University of London is an institutional member of the University of London. It has 3 faculties, eighteen departments, and about 8,000 undergrad and postgraduate students from all over the world. The campus is situated west of Egham, Surrey, within the perimeters of the Greater London Urban Area. Egham campus was established in 1879, by the entrepreneur and philanthropist Thomas Holloway. Royal Holloway College was a female-only college, and was opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. Royal Holloway College became a constituent college of the University of London in 1900. After World War II, the RHC began enrolling male postgraduate students, 20 years later, male undergraduate students. In 1985, Royal Holloway College merged with Bedford College (another previously all-female institution in London which was founded in 1849 and, like RHC, joined the University of London in 1900 and began enrolling male students in 1965). The merged college was named Royal Holloway and Bedford New College (RHBNC), this remains the official name of the college.

The Founder's Building dominates the main campus. It has a Grade I listing and is modeled on the Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley in France. It has a very distinctive north and south towers, two large quadrangles and houses a chapel, dining hall, kitchen, lecture halls, a library as well as student rooms and offices. Such is its allure as an architectural masterpiece, it has often been used in TV shows and movies (examples include Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction, Midsomer Murders) as a backdrop whenever a 'high class, old world university' look was called for.
