Royal College of Art

Kensington Gore, London, SW7 2EU

The Royal College of Art is a 3rd level art school located in London, UK. It is the world’s sole postgraduate university of art and design, offering degrees of Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The RCA is based in the South Kensington and Battersea areas of Central London.

The RCA's Schools provide an array of studio work, philosophy, and research learning opportunities. There are 24 distinct programmes spanning most of the major art and design disciplines, delivered through its six constituent Schools. MA programmes and MPhil/PhD research are provided through the Schools, with a combination of facilities and opportunities for interdisciplinary activities. All programmes offer assisted learning through hands-on tutorials, seminars and support for individual and group projects, learning is tailored to give each student the support needed in order to build expertise in their respective discipline. The Royal College of Art was instrumental in the emergence of the modern school of British sculpture in the 1920s and in the proliferation of Pop Art in the 1960s. Notable RCA alumni include personalities as diverse as Ian Dury of "Ian Dury & the Blockheads" fame, award winning inventor and entrepreneur Sir James Dyson and renowned director and producer Sir Ridley Scott who directed such movie classics as Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Gladiator (2000) and American Gangster (2007).

Its Royal Charter specifies that the objectives of the College are "to advance learning, knowledge and professional competence particularly in the field of fine arts, in the principles and practice of art and design in their relation to industrial and commercial processes and social developments and other subjects relating thereto through teaching, research and collaboration with industry and commerce".

Located in Kensington Gore next to the Royal Albert Hall in an area informally known as "Albertopolis", the stretch from Hyde Park to the Victoria & Albert Museum, the RCA building is a relatively modern Grade II listed building and dates from the 1960s. It was designed in-house by staff from the RCA. The College also has a newer, purpose-built campus in Battersea, which houses the Sculpture and Painting programmes as well as the RCA Moving Image Studio.
