Playhouse Theatre

Northumberland Avenue, London WC2N 5DE

The Playhouse Theatre is located in the heart of London in the neighborhood of Trafalgar Square, between the River Thames and Piccadilly Circus, with many five star London hotels nearby.

The Theatre opened for the first time on the 11th March 1882 with Offenbach's Madam Favart. At that time it was named The Royal Avenue Theatre despite the fact that it ran mostly burlesques and comic operas it later started to host more dramas. The most current building was built to Blow and Baillerey’s design (1905). For 25 years from 1951-1976, the Playhouse Theatre was under BBC management. It was turned into studio, where legendary bands such as The Rolling Stone, Queen and The Beatles gave live performances. When BBC left the building, the Playhouse Theatre went into an unsound state. In 1987 it was repaired and reopened with successful musical play “Girlfriend”.

In January 2003, the new independent owners of the Theatre became Maidstone Productions belonging to London and Broadway producers. The biggest productions under Ted and Norman Tulchin’s management include Gagarin Way, Eden and Vincent in Brixton in the West End; The Unexpected Man and Dinner with Friends, awarded with the Pulitzer Prize. Since March 2003, the Playhouse Theatre is under the Ambassador Theatre Group management which is responsible for programming as well.

The West End Theatre has a seating capacity for 786 people on three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle. The Upper of The Playhouse Theatre is quite small compared with other theatres in the West End.
