Rosebery Avenue, London EC1R 4TN

The Peacock Theatre is located in Portugal Street near Aldwych and Covent Gardens in the City of Westminster.

Since the 17th Century a theatre has stood on this site, previously know as Gibbon’s Tennis Court or the Vere Street Theatre. On December the 8th 1660 Mrs Hughes became the first (identified) women to trend the boards of a London Theatre in a performance of Othello. This company then left the Theatre in 1663 and in 1809 this London Theatre was destroyed by fire.

Several years later a new theatre was built on the site this theatre was in the Beaux – Arts Style and opened its doors on the 13th of November 1911 as the London Opera House. Oswald Stroll purchased the Theatre in 1916 and renamed the London theatre the Stoll Theatre. In 1942 Rose Marie played at the Stoll Theatre followed by Kismet and Stars on Ice in 1947.

In 1960 a new smaller theatre was built and named the Royalty Theatre in 1960, this was the first West End theatre to built since the Saville Theatre in 1931. This London theatre was equipped for screening Cinerama becoming London’s third Cinerama theatre. In 1966 the theatre returned to live theatre performances.

Today the Peacock Theatre has a seating capacity for up to 1000 delegates and is owned and comprises part of the London School of Economics and Political Science campus that also use the theatre for lectures, public talk’s conferences and open days. In 1996 the Sadler’s Wells moved to the Peacock Theatre and now the London theatre is now shared between the London School of Economics and Sadler Wells productions. This West End Theatre recently played host to Price Waterhouse Coopers, EMI, The London School of Economics and Granada Television. The Peacock has also shown the production of The Snowman as their Christmas show for a number of years running.
