BMX Track

London

The BMX competitions at London 2012 took place at the specially constructed BMX Track located next to the Velodrome in the Olympic Park. Construction of the 6,000 seat capacity track started on site in April 2011. The course was 400 metres long and was first used competitively for the third round of the UCI BMX Super cross World Cup.

The BMX competition is one of the most recent sports added to the Olympic schedule having made its debut at the Olympic Games in Beijing, only four years ago. Participants started on an 8m-high ramp, the course consisted of jumps, bumps and tightly banked corners. Following individual time trials, eight riders competed in heats, with each race lasting approximately 45 seconds.

When the Games finished, the BMX Track was adjusted in order to make it suitable for community use. A new mountain bike track and road-cycle circuit was combined with the BMX Track to form VeloPark, a multi purpose facility for cyclists of all abilities, including cycling clubs.
