Arts Theatre

6 - 7 Great Newport Street, London Chinatown, London WC2H 7JB

The Arts Theatre is London’s smallest West End commercial receiving house; The Arts Theatre first opened its doors in April 1927 where the west end theatre operated as a member’s only club for the performance of unlicensed plays, it was one of a small number of committed independent companies who took risks by producing a diverse range of new and experimental plays, which at the time were considered to be commercially non viable on the West End stage.

The Arts Theatre is located on Great Newport Street, in Westminster, central London. The Arts Theatre was designed to be a small intimate Theatre with only 350 seats. This West End theatre hosts new, innovative and revival plays as well as musicals, comedy, music, dance and other original stage performances.

The Arts also became a home for The Unicorn children's theatre from 1967 to 1999 under the direction of its founder Caryl Jenner, but adult performances continued in the evenings. In 2,000 the Arts Theatre lease was taken over by a consortium of UK and US producers and they relaunched the London Theatre as a West End Theatre.

Still to this day, this London theatre operates as the West Ends smallest commercial receiving house with a seating capacity for 350 people in its two-tier basement auditorium.  This west end theatre went under refurbishment in 2006 and now this Theatre is a modern venue, which was originally created as a private theatre members club.
