Landscape and Garden Design RHS Chelsea 2014

Designing two gardens this year, Jo Thompson Landscape & Garden Design are cultivating a storm for the horticultural charity, Perennial - with an awkward shaped 'Fresh' garden and a floral marquee exhibit.

The Royal Horticultural Society anticipates the 'Fresh' gardens to demonstrate lateral thinking. Responding to this brief, London Square who are sponsors, chose a problematical space. Using new materials, creating a sculpture, which serves as a seat - a piece of art travels around the garden. Jo Thompson Landscape & Garden Design bravely use standard roses, which have been absent from Chelsea for some time. They also employ three magnificent multi-stem Betula utilis var and jacquemontii, with their remarkable bark, to create privacy and height.

Incorporating a colour spectrum of green and white with hints of pale apricot links in with a cream-coloured marble sculpture by Frederic Chevarin, the design promises to awe and inspire.

Having been named as the Society of Garden Designer's Future Designer of 2014, Jo wowed the judges with her coastal garden at Camber, they said, "The Judges' award this year focused on a sense of place. Jo Thompson's Sea Gem is an exquisite interpretation of a sandy dune-like garden in front of a coastal dwelling, which is not only strikingly beautiful, but first class in designing for a particular locality and capturing perhaps the most important aspect of good design - sense of place".
