On 18th July 2013 Nelson Mandela, the world's greatest living statesman, will turn 95. To celebrate this 5ive Star’s partner, Belgravia Gallery, will be holding an exhibition of his signed lithographs, pieces from his ‘Struggle Series’ and other previously unseen collectible items.
Now that he is the world's favourite elder statesman, it is easy to forget that Nelson Mandela spent much of his adult life behind bars. But for the former South African president himself, the memories are still painfully clear, as is evidenced by his latest piece of art, Bars and Key.
This work is a limited edition lithograph which features the bars on his cell, painted with his fingers, and a replica of the key. Since Mandela produced his first work of art a few years ago, the prices for his pieces have risen enormously, which is fantastic, as the money raised from sales goes to his charities for homeless children and victims of Aids.
The lithographs on exhibit give an intimate glimpse into his life behind bars, some including drawings of the courtyard that his cell looked on to and some even letting the natural beauty of Robben Island come through, bright as they are with the colours of survival.
The exhibition also includes photographs by the Father of South African photography, Jurgen Schadeberg, who has photographed Mandela since 1951. Images include Nelson Mandela at the Treason Trial, Defiance Campaign, and even images of himself in his' Mandela and Tambo' law office.
