Sutra at Sadlers Wells will run from Wednesday 3rd April – Saturday 6th April 2013. You will see the return of one of the most fascinating shows to have hit London in recent years as Antony Gormley’s award-winning collaboration with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and the Shaolin Monks returns to Sadlers Wells. Tickets to the show will enable dance and theatre fans to once again enjoy the winner of the prestigious Bellettanz Production of the Year award, featuring captivating dance, Kung-Fu and art from acclaimed artist, Antony Gormley.
The performance features 17 Shaolin Monks - from the original Shaolin Temple in China – and dancer Ali Thabet who will be playing the role originally performed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Sutra sees the captivating performance all played out on a specially conceived set from Antony Gormley, the celebrated artist famous for his award-winning sculptor and installation art.
Sutra was one of the biggest hits of 2008, as it brought the remarkable world of the Shaolin Monks to Sadlers Wells in dance, Kung Fu and art combined as what soon became a critically-acclaimed theatre production. It explores the world of the temple and the monks within it, looking into the philosophy and faith behind a tradition that goes back thousands of years but which still has an important place in contemporary culture.
Sutra is a collaboration between the Shaolin Monks and Antony Gormley, complemented by stunning dance from Ali Thabet and a beautiful score from Polish composer Szymon Brzoska. The Shaolin Monks are Kung Fu experts known the world-over, whilst Antony Gormley is famous for works such as The Angel of the North, Event Horizon, Quantum Cloud and the recent Fourth Plinth installation on Trafalgar Square, One and Other.
