The Velodrome is a state of the art, indoor cycling venue that hosted the Track Cycling events. It is another of the sustainable and eco-friendly venues that were used for the 2012 Olympics.

Successful British Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy was consulted about the design to give an expert view on the conditions with in the venue.

Out of all of the Olympic Park venues, The Velodrome is the most sustainable in terms of design and construction. Sustainable choices, a feature of all construction in preparation of London 2012, has been made wherever possible; from the sourcing of wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council to be used on the track and external cladding, to the installation of a 100% naturally ventilated system. This helps create a perfect track-level temperature, eliminating the need for air conditioning which again adds to the sustainability of the venue.

The design of the venue makes optimal use of natural light, reducing the need for electric lighting. It also has a low cable net roof system, creating an amazing atmosphere for spectators whilst reducing the amount of space to heat and ventilate.

What the majority of people don’t realise is that bicyclesfor velodromes have no brakes. They employ a single fixed rear gear, or cog,that does not freewheel. This helps the rider maximize speed, reduces weight,and avoids sudden braking while nevertheless allowing the rider to slow by pushing back against the pedals.

The venue accommodated numerous cycling tracks and facilities after the Games and it aimed to promote cycling as part of its environmentally friendly approach to the Games. Like many of the venues, broadcasting facilities will be shared with other venues to increase efficiency.
