Savoy Theatre

The Strand, London WC2R 0ET

The Savoy Theatre is located on one of London’s most famous streets, the Strand in the city of Westminster. This West End London theatre was built by Richard D’Oyly on the site of the old Savoy Palace. The Savoy theatre opened in October 1881 and showed the popular comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan.

The Savoy theatre was designed by C. J. Phipps and was the first theatre, and the first public building in the world, to be lit entirely by electricity. Eight years after the building of the theatre in 1889, Richard D’Oyly built the Savoy Hotel along the river Thames where today stands a luxurious five star hotel. This theatre has gone under two major constructions in 1929 the theatre was closed and went under a major refurbishment with a completely new design. The ceiling was painted like the sky and seating designed to reflect flower beds in its colouring.  In 1993 the Savoy had to be re-built following a fire.

In 1941 the Savoy theatre hosted Noël Coward's première of Blithe Spirit. In recent years this west end London theatre has presented opera, Shakespeare, musical plays, as well as other non-musicals. Some musicals included revivals of Fiddler on the Roof and Carousel, and Never Forget. In 2009 the original production of Legally Blonde has been playing at the Savoy Theatre.

Today the Savoy is part of the Ambassador Theatre Group and is a Grade II* listed building with a seating capacity for 1,150 people over three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.
