Formally known as the Royal English Opera House in 1891 and The Palace Theatre of Varieties the name of the theatre was eventually altered in 1911, to the Palace Theatre and became the home to many popular musicals and shows such as No, No Nanette and The Sound of Music in the 1960s. The Palace Theatre is located in Shaftesbury Avenue, near Cambridge Circus on the Charing Cross Road in the City of Westminster.

The Palace Theatre in London was originally built by impresario Richard D’oyly Carte. The Palace Theatre throughout the 20th Century was a popular venue for musicals and revues including Gay Divorce. The Palace Theatre also hosted productions of The Sound of Music and Jesus Christ Superstar which played for eight years. Finian’s Rainbow, King’s Rhapsody, Cabaret, Song and Dance, The Woman in White, Spamalotand the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Les Misérables (1985) were other popular musicals which were held at The Palace Theatre in the west end city of Westminster.

Andrew Lloyd Webber in August 1983 purchased the freehold of the Palace Theatre for £1.3 million and subsequently set out on a series of works to restore the west end London theatre. Lloyd Webber's production of The Woman in White received its world première on in 2004 and ran for 19 months.

The Palace Theatre was listed as a Grade II star Theatre in June 1960 by English Heritage. The Palace Theatre in London comprises of four levels with a seating capacity for 1,400 people, facilities feature a number of bars on each level, as well as toilets towards the rear of each section. The London Theatre also features a Royal Room and a Kitchen room for functions and private events.
