The oldest theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue is the Lyric Theatre in London. This west end theatre opened its doors in December 1888. CJ Phipps designed this theatre which was originally built for impresario Henry J Leslie as a home for operetta.
This London theatre has successfully hosted drama, comedy and musicals. Today the Lyric Theatre retains many of it original features, with the stalls in the auditorium of this magnificent theatre are equipped with infra-red system and are fully air-conditioned. The West End theatre staged mostly comic operas in its early days, today this west end theatre is home to comedies, musicals and straight dramas. The Lyric Theatre has been home to a great many successful productions in its time with recent successes been 'Blood Brothers' in 1983
