Duchess Theatre

3 - 5 Catherine Street, London WC2B 5LA

The Duchess Theatre is a theatre in West End of London. It is located in Catherine Street near Aldwych in the City of Westminster.

This West End Theatre opened on 25th of November 1929 with a play Tunnel Trench by Hubert Griffith. The Venue is one of the smallest 'proscenium arched' West End theatres in London. Ewen Barr was the original designer of the West End Theatre and Arthur Gibbons was the promoter of the Venue.

The Duchess Theatre in 1930 hosted the shortest run in West End history with the production of The Intimate Revue which closed without completing its first performance. The record runs of 1,997 performances belong to Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit.

On 26 September 2005 producers Max Weitzenhoffer and Nica Burns bought the venue, along with the three other theatres creating Nimax Theatres.  Currently theatre is still owned and operated by Nimax Theatres and can seat 479 patrons. Although it’s a small playhouse, the sight-lines are excellent due to the Circle being suspended from the roof .The Duchess Theatre is still to this day a very important part of the West End theatre scene and is known for presenting some acclaimed shows.
