The Great River Race of 2013 will take place on Saturday 7th September at 11.40am from Millwall Slipway to Ham on the River Thames. This 21 mile race brings both internationally acclaimed Olympic Rowing Athletes and beginners alike into one race where handicaps level the playing field. It also has become a big scene for celebrities with the likes of Sting, Jerry Hall and champion rower Steve Redgrave all attending the event along with 2400 other competitors aiming for the 35 trophies.

Colloquially known as the “London Marathon of Water”, the event consists of a huge range of boats that all require a flag and a cox to steer teams to potential victory.

Last year’s winning crew “Rafters” aboard the “Rio Draco” who finished with a time of 02:06:33 look set to return to this great race that is now in its 25th year. A cannon sounds as the victorious competitors cross the finish line at Riverside Ham House just after 3pm.

Some people choose to don their best fancy dress suit for the event and you can be sure to see many recognisable superheroes as well as scores of actors and well known musicians that all add to the fun on the day.

In 2009, a controversial decision to reverse the route resulted in a rip-roaring success that lead to the revised route becoming the regular format to the delight of crowds and competitors.

All of our top 5 star hotels in London are located close to the action that will unfold at The Great River Race 2013.

Entry is £49.75 per team member but closed on 13th August. Boats are still available for rent off the official Great River Race website.
