Science Museum

Exhibition Road, London SW7 2DD

The Science Museum has been in existence for about 150 years. Its origins stem from the Great Exhibition of 1851, held in Hyde Park in the huge glass building known as the Crystal
Palace. The popularity of the exhibition ensured a large financial excess, which the patron Prince Albert suggested should be used to establish educational amenities. It was decided that science was so important to the strength of the nation that it deserved its own showcase.

Over the years, the pursuit of the mission of raising curiosity and releasing creativity among the scientific innovators of tomorrow has seen the museum undertake several alterations. The East Block was constructed between 1913 and 1928, a process prolonged by the First World War; the Centre Block, now home to the “Making the Modern World” gallery, was built in the 1960s; and in 2000 a new wing was opened to house contemporary science.

Today the London the Science Museum uses modern technology such as 3D movies and effects simulators to enhance its displays.  This museum is the ideal place for a family day trip and can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. The museums main attractions include the development of transportation over the years, the Stephen Hawkings Room and an exhibit on Medical History.

The Museum shop sells many exciting gadgets, science kits and toys. The museum also has an online shop. Choose from the Energy café, the Deep Blue café, the D.café or the picnic area, all of which are designed for family use, use fair trade coffee and British organic milk. The Science Museum, is located next door to the Natural History Museum in South Kensington and admission is free.
