Noel Coward Theatre

85 - 88 St Martins Lane, London WC2N 4AU

The Noel Coward theatre can be found on Saint Martin’s Lane in the London Borough of the City of Westminister.  The theatre has a capacity of  872 seats over four levels and has also earned the prestigious Grade ll listed status by English Heritage.  It was built by Sir Charles Wyndham and designed by the architect W.G.R.  Sprague.  The exterior boasted the classical style and the interior the Rococo style.  The theatre first opened its doors to the public on 12 March 1903 as the New Theatre with a production of “Rosemary”  starring Charles Wyndham alongside his wife Mary.

The theatre’s most notable productions throughout has included “I will Leave it to You” 1920 which was Noel Coward’s first play and the George Bernard Shaw’s play “ St. Joan” 1924.  The renowned actor Sir John Gielgud had tremendous commercial success with “Richard of Bordeaux”  and “Hamlet” 1933.  During the Second World War the New Theatre would be home to the Old Vic and Sadler’s Wells Theatre Companies as both were destroyed in the Blitz.

The theatre was to be renamed in 1973 as the Albery Theatre in memory of the late Sir Bronson Albery who served as its manager for several years.  During more recent times the venue has gone on to produce very successful productions of Shakespeare such as “Twelfth Night”.  The show was set in India and all the cast were Asian.  The Royal Shakespeare Company went on to  host such famous plays as  “Hamlet”, “Romeo & Juliet”, “Macbeth” and “King Lear”  in the years 2004 to 2005.

Extensive refurbishment was carried out by the owners Delfont-Mackintosh Ltd. in 2006 and with this reopened its doors under  the new name of the Noel Coward Theatre.  The renaming was to honour one of England’s finest playwrights and actors. The reopening launched the very successful Broadway hit, “Avenue Q”  which was to run until early 2009.
