Waterloo Place
Street
The Athenaeum at the corner of Waterloo Place is the leading club for politicians and academics. Its frieze is copied from the Parthenon. The Institute of Directors on the opposite corner was, until 1976, the United Services Club, the Duke of Wellington’s favourite club. Walk down Waterloo Place and turn right. Carlton House Terrace was built by Nash as homes for the aristocracy in 1832. Look at the façades on the Pall Mall clubs across the gardens and the gas lamps along the south side of the road. No 5 is the Turf Club, whose membership includes racehorse owners and trainers and several Dukes.
