Street
Opposite No 83 on the corner of St James’s Square is the Army & Navy Club. Known as ‘The Rag’ ever since a dissatisfied 19th Century member described his meagre meal there as ‘a rag and famish’ affair. No 89, the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), has its own squash courts, swimming pool, Turkish baths and post office. No 104, The Reform Club was the starting point for Philleas Fogg’s journey around the world in eighty days. The Club was founded in 1836 after the Reform Bill went through Parliament. No 106, The Traveller’s Club was founded in 1819. Members had to prove they had travelled 500 miles from London, a distance considered a great journey at the time.
