The Whigs' Brooks's Club
Walking down St James’s you will first come across Brook’s on the corner of Park Place. Founded in 1764, it was renowned for gambling with high stakes. It was the leading club for Whigs sympathetic with the American revolution. The lead tubs outside are engraved with the date 1776. Just past Park Place is cobble-stoned Blue Ball Yard. At the far end of the yard is the rear of The Stafford and its American Bar. The black and white former stables (now the World Famous Carriage House rooms) offered far less salubrious accommodation for grooms above their charges.
